WHITMOREITE   Palermo #1 Mine, N. Groton, NH
Approx. 1 mm fieldof view

Species:           WHITMOREITE
Locality:         Palermo #1 Mine, N. Groton, NH
Specimen Size: 0.3 mm whitmoreite spray - top photo. All photos from the same specimen.
Field Collected: From a crate of Palermo rocks gifted by Bob Whitmore
Catalog No.: u1938
Notes: Visual ID.The bright orange-yellow color of these sprays suggested an initial identification of cacoxenite. The top and bottom photos were taken with incandescent SOLUX lighting. The middle two photos were taken (two years later) with LED lighting.
Jim Nizamoff opined (May 2018): "Rarely whitmoreite will occur as a divergent spray of prismatic crystals without a spherical core. I have seen it like that in the assemblage you have, so my inclination is leaning toward whitmoreite."
Comparing the chisel termination of these crystals with flat-basel terminations of cacoxenite photos on mindat, reinforces the whitmoreite identification.
The matrix is visually identified as phosphoferrite, best seen in the second photo.

BABINGTONITE   Rt. 101 - 101A road cut, Amherst, NH
0.8 mm babingtonite crystal.

Species:           BABINGTONITE
Locality:          Rt. 101 - 101A road cut, Amherst, NH
Specimen Size: 0.8 mm babingtonite crystal.
Field Collected: Tom Mortimer
Catalog No.: u2322
Notes: Isolated babingtonite crystals larger than 0.5 mm are uncommon at the 101 - 101A road cut.
The cracks appear to be growth faults, not crystal fractures.

ZIRCON    N. Sugarloaf Mtn., Bethlehem, NH
1.2 mm prismatic zircon crystal cluster in albite vug.
Species:           ZIRCON
Locality:          N. Sugarloaf Mtn., Bethlehem, NH
Specimen Size: 1.2 mm prismatic zircon crystal cluster in albite vug.
Field Collected: Tom Mortimer
Catalog No.: u172
Notes: A re-done photo of this specimen. The group was quite deep within the vug, so difficult to get a lot of light onto it. Most of the prismatic zircon crystals at the N. Sugarloaf locality are embedded in feldspar. Free-standing zircon crystals are uncommon. The yellow crusty mineral on the zircon is likely mica. This zircon group is not fluorescent.

FLUORITE    N. Sugarloaf Mtn., Bethlehem, NH
0.3 mm fluorite crystal
Species:           FLUORITE
Locality:          N. Sugarloaf Mtn., Bethlehem, NH
Specimen Size: 0.3 mm fluorite crystal
Field Collected: Tom Mortimer - June, 1989
Catalog No.: u172
Notes: These cubic clear fluorites with purple octahedral facits are quite photogenic. Although I had photoed a few of these before, I thought I would try a few more.

COLUMBITE-TANTALITE    N. Sugarloaf Mtn., Bethlehem, NH
1.5 mm field of view. Termination end of columbite-tantalite blade.
Species:           COLUMBITE-TANTALITE
Locality:          N. Sugarloaf Mtn., Bethlehem, NH
Specimen Size: 1.5 mm field of view. Termination end of columbite-tantalite blade.
Field Collected: Tom Mortimer - May, 1989
Catalog No.: u149
Notes: Analysis done for 1990 R&M article indicated a composition intermediate between ferrococombite and ferrotantalite. An EDS analysis of a massive chunk of this showed about a 4:1 ratio of Fe:Mn.
